THE STORY.
The Fort Wayne Colored Giants were part of a rich and often overlooked chapter of the city’s baseball history—one built during an era when the game was still divided by segregation.
Beginning in the early 1900s, the Colored Giants became one of several Black baseball teams to compete in Fort Wayne, helping establish a strong local baseball culture that extended far beyond organized white leagues. Teams like the Colored Giants played throughout the Midwest, hosting traveling clubs and competing against some of the best Black teams of the era.
While much of this history went undocumented for decades, the legacy of teams like the Colored Giants remains an essential part of both Fort Wayne sports history and the larger story of Black baseball in America.
